This quick online hearing test was designed by our diverse team of engineers, web developers and audiologists. The test utilizes pure tone audio files created by a leading sound engineer, whose work is recognized across online hearing aid forums and by hearing aid retailers.
Our goal was to create a simple, effective online hearing test, encouraging more people to take action regarding their hearing health and maintenance. See your results instantly in a chart similar to an audiogram.
Why to Calibrate Your System?
This step mitigates the unreliability that can be associated with online hearing tests. Variances in devices used to take the test, as well as headphone type and quality can alter the intended sound level of the tones, so finding the proper volume for your device is imperative. By carefully completing this next step, you are able to gain truly insightful results about your hearing health.
Set Your Calibrated Volume
Step 1
Listen to the Sound Put on your headphones, set your volume to your normal listening level, and play this sound clip of hands rubbing together. Make a mental note of the volume you perceive. Close your eyes to increase your focus.
Step 2
Replicate the Sound Now, take your headphones off and replicate this sound by briskly rubbing your hands together just in front of your nose. Again, close your eyes to improve your concentration. Compare the volume you perceive relative to the volume of the calibration audio file.
Step 3
Match the Sound Levels Continuously adjust your system’s volume, play the calibration audio and compare the volume to your live replication of the sound. Once your hands rubbing together (without the headphones) and the audio file (with headphones) sound the same to you, you are ready to start the test.
Test Instructions
The interface will test 6 frequencies for each ear, starting with the left and ending with the right. Three pulse tones will play, and you are asked to click whether or not you hear the tones.
Testing Left Ear
Tones are ready…
The first tone at the first frequency will immediately start playing in your left ear once you click “Start the Tones.”

How do I read my results?
The test measured the threshold dBs for both ears at 6 frequencies, checking the lowest dB you could hear in a quiet environment. Like a typical auidogram, the chart is inverted, with -10db above the 0 line and 90 dB as the lower limit. For this reason, the higher your data points show on the chart, the better your hearing. Any data point at or above the 20dB line on the inverted chart, is generally considered normal hearing. If the results indicate a possible hearing loss, the threshold dB will be below this 20dB line on the inverted chart. If this is the case at any frequency on the chart, this indicates that amplification could assist you in your daily life. Please call our patient care team to discuss your results with a FitHearing Audiologist.

For these reasons and many more, it is important to catch your hearing loss as soon as possible so that you can investigate your options for treatment and avoid these potential long-term health byproducts.
The Calibration Process and Benefit
While the calibration process prior to testing may feel challenging and imperfect, this step is key and actually enables an online hearing test to render precise results. A drawback to some online hearing tests is the inability to predict the true output of the test tones once they are played through the test takers system, even provided the input tones themselves are perfectly accurate. Because varying devices & headphones will alter the tones intended dB output, calibration of your system’s volume prior to testing is the only way to achieve precise results.
This step conveniently adapts any device and headphone combination to the test tones, so you don’t need any special hardware to achieve actionable results from home. The calibration method asks that you briskly rub your hands together just in front of your nose because this is a repeatable action of consistent loudness across all people. In personally completing this action and then matching its loudness to the loudness of an audio file recording of this same action, you are able to ensure the tones are all played at their proper dBs. In order to receive results with a high confidence level, the tester must carefully follow the calibration steps and take the test in a completely quiet room.
