Brand Spotlight: Oticon

In Hearing Aids, Hearing Technology, Research

Oticon, one of the world’s most successful manufacturers of hearing aids, has been designing high-quality hearing aid devices for people with hearing loss for over a century.

Their slogan, “People first,” specifically defines what inspires them to grow their goods. The Danish manufacturer is well-known for its discreet and well-designed hearing aids, which use state of the art technology.

Oticon products are developed for factors such as age, processing ability, listening environment, past hearing aid experience, and personal preference that allows for a highly personalized fit and greater satisfaction across a broad range of wearers.

Through regular research at the Ericksholm Research Institute, Oticon continues to drive up standards for hearing aid design.

History

The story of Oticon begins with one man and his quest to help his wife live her best life. Hans Demant went from Denmark to England, motivated by a sincere desire to help his hearing-impaired wife by purchasing a hearing aid.

Eventually, Hans Demant begins importing and selling the first hearing aids to Denmark, inspired by those around him in need of hearing assistance.

In 1910 his son William took over the company. The World Wars and the Great Depression hampered his ability to export finished hearing aids from England, so he started importing partially completed versions and finishing them in Denmark.

Today, the company is one of the successful hearing aid companies in the world. Here are some of the famous technologies that they are known for.

BrainHearing

The patented BrainHearing platform from Oticon offers more extensive guidance for how the brain processes sound and features enhanced real-time processing to provide a more realistic hearing experience.

BrainHearing technology is designed to support the brain and encourage it to work better. A better understanding of the sound environment is given to help the brain perform these tasks.

OpenSound Navigator

To accept multiple speakers, models such as the Oticon Opn were built on an open sound model. This unique signal processing approach opens up to the environment around you. The OpenSound Navigator works so rapidly and precisely that it can reduce unwanted noise in any environment soundscape. The OpenSound Navigator runs at ultra-fast speed, rebalancing the soundscape regularly while still providing constant access to all related sounds and speech. Through helping the brain naturally concentrate on what it needs, OpenSound Navigator technology gives users the chance to get back into those places they have missed going to, helping to enrich their lives.

Velox S platform

The Velox S is Oticon’s most powerful and sophisticated platform ever. The platform allows unprecedented computational power to unleash the full potential of the open sounds paradigm.

The Velox S platform provides:

  • Enhancements to a ground-breaking framework for enhanced memory.
  • Highly sensitive detectors which trigger 56,000 times a second to track changes in the acoustic environment.
  • Proactive feedback management is given with algorithms for signal processing.
  • Better configuration for improved performance in rechargeable batteries.

Current models

Oticon Opn S

When Oticon launched its famous Opn hearing aids in 2016, the company said its goal was to allow those with hearing loss to understand speech “on par with people with normal hearing”— even in noisy environments.” With its Opn S hearing aids, it took yet another big step towards that goal in 2019. More than an incremental update, the Made-for-iPhone Opn S versions are the flagship model used by Oticon. Opn also contains 5 ITE types that eliminate noise and help you understand multiple speakers with cutting-edge technology.

Oticon Opn Play

Open Play is a hearing aid that helps kids to hear sounds and develop their perception of speech in noise. The device helps children meet their developmental needs and rise to daily challenges.

Oticon Xceed

The Oticon Xceed is considered the most powerful hearing aid in the world. Powered by the Velox S and BrainHearing technologies, Oticon Xceed offers patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss greater exposure to speech than ever before.
