Bluetooth Hearing Aids
Bluetooth is a wireless communication platform that facilitates data transmission between two or more electronic devices. Bluetooth technology transmits data via high-frequency radio waves, allowing you to listen to music, watch movies, and talk “hands-free” from your smartphone to your hearing aid – all without needing a cord.
Many devices have integrated the technology since the introduction of Bluetooth in the 1990s, including laptops, smartphones, televisions, cell phones, music players, and as we will talk about in this article, hearing aids.
What are the benefits of Bluetooth hearing aids?
Using Bluetooth hearing aids has several advantages, including:
- Better music quality. Think about streaming your favorite music directly to your hearing aids from your iPhone or portable music player. In doing so, your hearing aids turn into a pair of high-quality earbuds.
- Hands-free phone calls. It’s more convenient to answer calls without having to hold your phone, and having the audio stream straight to the hearing aids provides enhanced sound quality for your conversations.
- Better TV sound. Audio streaming from your computer, tablet, or TV means better sound and increased speech understanding from movies and TV shows. This allows you to enjoy your favorite programs with ease!
- Convenience at the gym. Listen to your favorite music or podcasts in the gym without wires obstructing your movements as you exercise.
The rise of direct Bluetooth connectivity
When people think Bluetooth connectivity in the technology world, they imagine no wires at all. Until recently, for hearing aid users, using another device called a ‘streamer’ was the only way to connect hearing aids to a smartphone via Bluetooth. This device (worn around your neck or kept in your pocket) worked as a middleman between the Bluetooth-ready device and your hearing aids.
All of that has changed with Bluetooth’s direct connectivity. Here are two ways you can connect to the hearing aid directly, no streamer required:
Made for iPhone (MFi): These devices can connect directly to iPhones without the help of an intermediate streamer for audio and calls streaming.
Made for any phone: These devices will connect to any mobile phone with a Bluetooth connection. Phonak and Unitron are the only two hearing aid companies currently offering hearing aid models that provide this capability.

Signia Pure Charge & Go
Pure Charge&Go X is a receiver-in-canal (RIC) device that adds the first acoustic-motion sensors in the world.
